The Sharing Network is designed for elderly, mostly public housing residents in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. It offers free social, educational, recreational, artistic, and meditative conversations and activities in small groups over the phone. Its goal is to sustain the emotional health and cognitive abilities of elders who have limited social involvement and who do not have regular internet access. Each group is led by a moderator. Seniors choose from 15-17 different groups offered at a time. Typical groups are: making and enjoying food, Bible study, R&B and soul hits of the 60’s and 70’s, the sports story of the week, celebrating holidays, stretching and movement, storytelling, civil rights history and memories, Black art at the Brooklyn Museum, and crafts. Each group meets for an hour a week for a 5 or 6-week term. To foster cohesion and intimacy, groups are kept small, with up to 10 participants. The overriding purpose is to bring people together in intimate, safe, supportive spaces where they can enjoy interacting with friends and make new relationships which help them recover the sense of self that one derives from social contact.
