Gilbert was one of the most brilliant wordsmiths of the English language in the 19th century, being compared to Shakespeare in the quotability of his words. In addition he was a journalist, poet, lawyer, soldier, dramatist, and actor. The class will read and discuss Gilbert's librettos (online or in print), view selected excerpts of performances of G&S songs, and learn of his contribution to the English language musical theater.
