About this event
Urban Gardening Volunteer Experience
Saturday, November 4 9:30 am - 1:00 pm
A casual, educational brunch gathering at a neighborhood diner, followed by a local, hands‑on field trip. Members of GNPS's RISE team will share information on the health and climate benefits of urban green spaces. Then we'll walk five blocks to participate first‑hand in tending a local public garden. Once a woebegone, no‑name park, Butterfly Gardens at 18th St. and 7th Ave. is home to pollinator gardens and a school farm, thanks to community volunteers. The park's steward, HomeGrown Parks Volunteers, has invited us to join them in readying Butterfly Gardens for the winter. HomeGrown volunteers will suggest tasks appropriate for all levels of mobility. They will be on hand to show us the gardens and share information about volunteering to steward a NYC Park.
Rain date 11/11/2023
RISE is made up of 7 members of GNPS who attended an 8-week course co-sponsored by Village to Village Network and Cornell, to teach elders some basic climate science and train to be "climate stewards," educating others about climate change and what we can do to help.
