Princess Ida
Princess Ida Script
If you have enjoyed any of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas, you might want to explore the wit and wisdom of William S. Gilbert's librettos in detail. Gilbert was one of the most brilliant wordsmiths of the English language in the 19th century, being compared to Shakespeare in the quotability of his words. In addition he was a journalist, poet, lawyer, soldier, dramatist, and actor. The class will read and discuss Gilbert's librettos (online or in print), view selected excerpts of performances of G&S songs, and learn of his contribution to the English language musical theater.
