Beginning Spanish

In Person Beginners Spanish Class, September 2024

The instructor for this class is Dan La Botz (he uses Daniel in Spanish), member of Good Neighbors and a retired history professor who holds a Ph.D. in history and has written extensively about Mexico. He is not a native speaker, but is a fluent speaker who has read widely in Spanish history and literature and who has taught the Spanish language in the past.

GNPS is offering this beginners’ Spanish class that will begin on Thursday, September 12 at 4
p.m. and meet every Thursday at 4:00 for 4 weeks.  At that point we’ll see how people
are feeling about the class and how we proceed. Each class will last an hour and a half.
The course will have two aspects: 1) The instructor will introduce students to some basic
conversational Spanish and some grammar. 2) We will watch the Destinos series discussed
below.

The class will be based largely on a highly esteemed educational language telenovela called
Destinos. A telenovela (television novel) is often a soap opera, but in this case it’s a kind of
mystery. In the course of the story, you meet a number of characters from different countries
in different social classes thereby introducing a rich Spanish language experience.

Students will be required to watch an episode of Destinos on their own before each class.
